Who am I?
As I mentioned in my introduction, I'm currently attending college classes this school year while out on sabbatical from teaching high school industrial and technology classes at Kamehameha school on Oahu. I've always been interested in technology and was curious to learn more about social media, so when this course was offered, I figured why not give it a shot.
I'm a daily user of Facebook and have a few groups for different "circle" of friends and students. I created a Facebook page for my family because it is huge. My mother is the second eldest of 15 children and my grandfather has 11 siblings. The page has brought together so many of family members all over the world as well as their families.
I also made a page for my former students who are attending college for Architecture or Engineering. This page allows me to stay connected with my former students to see what they are learning to keep my curriculum up to date with the universities and industry. It's also a way for them to network with each other for ideas and assistance.
I also use Snapchat and Instagram to share pictures, but not as often as I do on Facebook. My twitter account is activated, but hardly ever used.
I like that this #ics119 class goals are positive and open minded. It makes for a cultivating learning environment and promotes a sense of comfort welcoming others to willingly share information.
I would like to think that I'm open to answer any questions to help others in our class. While visiting other classmate pages, I can add some constructive criticism and feedback. If anyone is at LCC, just send me a shout and we can work together on assignments.
A hui hou,
Mike M

Hi Mike! So if you take a sabbatical, do they just hire a long-term sub for the school year? It's nice that the school allows you to do that. I have been on the school's campus once before when my daughter, who attended Leilehua, had a marching band event. It is a beautiful campus.
ReplyDeleteHi Jonah....in most sabbatical situations they would hire a replacement, but the classes I teach there really wasn't anyone. The teachers in my department took on the extra classloads for added pay.
DeleteHey Mike!
ReplyDeleteJust curious if you enjoy working as an educator? That's the direction I'm heading, and it's always great to hear others opinions. You also seem like you have awesome experience using Facebook, I have an account but I barely use it.. If you ever have any tips for me please let me know!
Thanks! Noeau
Hi Noeau...I went into teaching because I figured I would have a vacation every summer....in reality I opted to teach summer school ever since I got my degree. I love teaching, I love the students who keep me up to date on current trends, but I hate educational bureaucracies and having to continually justify why I teach what I teach every time someone with authority sneezes.
ReplyDeleteAs for Facebook, it's a great tool to stay connected with family and friends. I would say play around with the privacy setting to your comfort and add family members. If you feel comfortable add a friend or two and take it from there.
